The variety was bred by F. Zweigelt in Klosterneuburg by crossing Blauer Portugieser and Frankovka in 1923. It is grown on about 1,000 hectares in Austria.

Blauburger is a blue grape medium early variety. Leaf is medium-sized, pentagonal in shape, V-shaped blade profile. Grape is medium-sized, medium dense. Berries are small to medium-sized, circular shape on the profile. The colour of the skin is blue-black.
When grown under fungicidal protection, the variety is resistant to infestation by noble rot, moderately resistant to infestation by downy mildew and powdery mildew. The variety is moderately resistant to showering.
Yield of grapes is medium to high, sugar content of must is medium high.
