Thanks to the positive feedback from last year, the wines will again be divided into three sections:
Bubbles &amp; Natural &amp; PIWI
- All three of these categories are united by their ever-growing popularity around the world and the Czech Republic is no exception! Alongside sparkling wines of all kinds will be available DEMETER-certified samples and a range of natural and low-intervention wines.
Local Darlings
&ndash; This designation was given to wines made from our most typical varieties, namely Gr&uuml;ner Veltliner, Riesling, Blaufr&auml;nkisch&nbsp;and St. Laurent. Visitors from all over the world will have the opportunity to become acquainted with our unique variety, P&aacute;lava, which will be represented in both dry and naturally sweet variants.
The Internationals
- They can be found in vineyards all over the world: Rieslings, Sauvignons, Chardonnays, and Pinots Blanc and Noir. Wines of these varieties born in the Czech Republic impress with their unmistakable fruitiness, great acidity, and distinctive spiciness.
<h3>Czech Exposition</h3>
The Czech booth (E20), located in Hall 13, is sure to impress with its modern and original design by the well-known CHYBIK + KRISTOF ASSOCIATED ARCHITECTS. It can be easily recognized by its motif of circles and cylinders, which symbolize winemaking itself.
Each day, in the morning and afternoon, visitors to the fair will meet a different group of winemakers. Alongside some of our country's largest companies, medium and small-sized wineries also going to be well-represented. Among them are winners and finalists of prestigious competitions and all of them are united by a proactive approach to exporting abroad. Many of them are already exporting their wines all over the world. We could mention the already successful representation of our wines in Canada, Japan, and in the demanding market of London.
<h3>Masterclass</h3>
This year the renowned Czech National Sommelier and Weinakademiker, Kl&aacute;ra Koll&aacute;rov&aacute; is going to host a special masterclass titled Czech Jewels of Central Europe. In this exciting session, participants will have the exceptional opportunity to enjoy a tasting with a curated selection of 14 wine samples. Under the expert guidance of Kl&aacute;ra Koll&aacute;rov&aacute;, participants will discover the unique characteristics of each grape variety and gain valuable insights into the rich diversity of flavors, aromas, and terroirs of the Czech Republic. The masterclass will take place in Hall 13, on 10 March at 10 a.m.

Wines from Moravia and Bohemia at PROWEIN 2024

THAYA winery is located in the village of Havran&iacute;ky near Znojmo, where it has built a modern complex. Its basic philosophy is respect for nature and respect for the region, which after all is confirmed by the name of the winery, which in German means the river Dyje. For the first time, the winery participated in the competition in 2020, and in 2021 their chief oenologist Ing. Jakub Smrčka became Enologist of the Year, in 2022 the winery won the category of medium-sized wineries to now reach the title of the highestThe winery is now the winner of the medium winery category, and at the same time as last year.
"We run our winery with respect for naturě, with an emphasis on quality raw material, i.e. grapes, and with respect for the region, and this is further proof that we do it well. We will continue to do this, we certainly don't want to fall asleep, because the competition, which is actually friends from other wineries, is very strong. Our whole industry is moving forward at a rocket pace," said Ing. Jakub Smrčka, enologist of THAYA winery. "I am also glad to see that Znojmo has made a significant mark in this year's competition thanks to the award of Mr Vajčner, with whom I started my career at Znov&iacute;n Znojmo. Znojmo was perhaps a bit sleepy at first, but now it is growing tremendously in terms of tourism and wine and has a huge potential for the future," he added.

The small winery category was dominated by V&aacute;lka Winery, the oldest organic family winery in Moravia, located in Nosislav near Hustopeče. In the large winery category, the winery &Scaron;těp&aacute;n Maň&aacute;k from Ž&aacute;dovice in the Hodon&iacute;n region won the first place. It is also a family winery, but it has grown into a large and successful winery in Slov&aacute;cko, which has recently opened modern representative premises.

In addition to the absolute winner, other awards were traditionally announced under the guidance of moderator Mark Eben at the Brno Observatory and Planetarium. The award "LOMAX Enologist of the Year 2023 " - the prize for a young winemaker, enologist under 40 years of age - was awarded to Karel Novotný from the winery of the same name, whose wine is e.g. Novotnovo, who is also an oenologist at &Scaron;těp&aacute;n Maň&aacute;k winery. The "Prof. Vil&eacute;m Kraus, CSc. Award" for an outstanding wine personality for his or her lifetime contribution to viticulture or winemaking was awarded to Ing. Pavel Vajčner, who for thirty years held the position of director of the Znov&iacute;n Znojmo winery, one of the largest and most successful wineries in the Znojmo region. The "MENDEL Faculty of Horticulture Student Award" goes to Hor&aacute;k, a small boutique winery from the village of Vrbice in the Velkopavlovice region. And the prize for the "Act of the Year 2023" was awarded to the Dunajovsk&eacute; Kopce winegrowers' association for its exemplary association activities in the field of development of viticulture, winemaking and wine trade, consisting in the continuousThe constant search for new creative forms of cooperation and promotion of the local product at the level of all members of different sizes and market importance.

 Three-stage evaluation

The award ceremony was preceded by a three-stage evaluation, where first a combination of the JUNIOR and SENIOR jury judging put the winery in the final and then the expert jury in a personalvisit to all the finalists' establishments, the wineries decided which best fulfilled the set criteria and, in particular, fulfilled the main idea of the competition, i.e. to exceed the common practice in the industry and to move it forward in the long term.
Traditionally, nine wineries competed in the finals. These were the small wineries V&aacute;lka, V&aacute;clav and &Scaron;palek. The medium-sized wineries were THAYA, Sonberk and KOLBY. And finally the large wineries &Scaron;těp&aacute;n Maň&aacute;k, Vladim&iacute;r Tetur and CH&Acirc;TEAU VALTICE - Vinn&eacute; sklepy Valtice.

THAYA from Znojmo region becomes the winery of the year 2023

It is no coincidence that the Wine Salon is called the showcase of Moravian and Czech winemaking. It not only represents the pinnacle of wine art, but also equally represents both wine regions and different wine styles. Wines from a total of 54 winemakers and wine companies are represented here according to the origin of the grapes in the individual wine sub-regions, i.e. 31 wines ofn come from Mikulovsk&aacute;, 29 from Velkopavlovick&aacute;, 23 from Slov&aacute;ck&eacute;, 14 from Znojemsk&aacute;, 2 from Litoměřick&aacute; and 1 from Mělnick&aacute;. This year, 26 varieties will be available for tasting in the form of 88 white, 10 red and 10 red78 wines will be dry, 6 semi-dry, 11 semi-sweet and 5 sweet. There will also be 2 sparkling wines.

There can be many keys to this - according to winemakers, varieties, regional specifics, residual sugar, etc., etc. There is a lot to take in in one visit," said Petr Gond&aacute;&scaron;, Salon manager from the National Wine Centre, which organises the competition and also manages the tasting exhibition, adding: "over the 24 years of its existence, the Salon has built a strong position among lovers of our wines, but more and more often it attracts also lay people who The Wine Salon is also becoming more popular with lay people who are just beginning to discover the beauty of wine or who have chosen it as a tourist destination on a holiday or trip. This is exactly what we want to achieve in the long term and what we are very pleased about. To be here not just for connoisseurs, but to be able to enthuse everyone who is willing to listen to the voice of Moravian and Czech wines."

The largest number of wines in this year's Wine Salon is the Bzenec Chateau Winery (10) followed by the wineries Ing. Among the varieties are Riesling (14), Chardonnay (12) and Pinot Noir with Riesling (9). Of the blue varieties, Pinot Noir (4) and Frankovka (3). In terms of quality, late harvests (54) and grape selections (29) clearly lead the way, with the 2022 (44) and 2021 (42) wines dominating in terms of vintage. In addition to the golden hundred wines, which are on display throughout the year, it is also possible to seasonally taste selected wines with the Silver Medal of the Salon or, for example, ros&eacute; wines, sparkling wines, etc.
The wines awarded with the gold medal of the Wine Salon 2024 and presented in the exhibition of the same name can be tasted and comparedthroughout the year until almost Christmas in free or professional sommelier-led tastings. Of course, it is also possible to buy selected wines in limited quantities. There is also an educational exhibition dedicated to winemaking and a shop selling gifts, wine literature, tasting glasses and sommelier's supplies.

Firstly, to get their wineries in exceptional shape and find the courage to enter, and secondly to make it through to the finals. The fourteenth winner of the Winery of the Year competition will be announced on Thursday

The road to the Salon is long and not at all easy. After all, each gold medalist was successively subjected to three evaluations and the golden hundred came from 2629 wines entered at the beginning of the competition. From the sub-regional rounds, a still quite generous 1506 wines advanced to the first national round. The strictest filter of professional tasters, but also, for example, chemical analysesonly 400 finalists had the opportunity to win the top prize.

Each visit to the tasting exhibition of the Valtice Chateau gives you the opportunity to get a comprehensive picture of how and what wines are produced in ours are made," said Petr Gond&aacute;&scaron;, manager of the Salon from the National Wine Centre, which organises the competition and also manages the tasting exhibition. The collection of 100 wines with the gold medal of the Wine Salon 2024 includes 54 winemakers and wine companies. The largest representation is the Chateau Winery Bzenec (10 wines) followed by the wineries Ing. Miroslav Volař&iacute;k and Kamil Proke&scaron; (6 wines) and &Scaron;těp&aacute;n Maň&aacute;k (5). This year's 24th edition The competition was held in the usual three-round format, with the commissioners judging the wines in the first phase in eachMoravian wine sub-regions (Znojemsk&aacute;, Mikulovsk&aacute;, Velkopavlovick&aacute;, Slov&aacute;ck&aacute;) and in the Bohemia wine region. Two national rounds of evaluation follow, which will determine the composition of the Wine Salon for the following year, the Champion and the category winners.
The competition itself is followed from February by a year-long tasting exhibition of the best 100 wines in the historic cellar of the Valtice Chateau. Here it is possible to taste the best wines of the year through several types of tasting programmes, including 'free tasting', sommelier-led programmes and individual tasting from a presentation machine. This year's opening to the public is scheduled for 1 February.
In addition to the hundred best wines awarded according to the Gold Medal of the Wine Salon of the Czech Republic 2024, the committee also awarded silver medals (for wines that advanced to the second round of evaluation and received a minimum of 84 points). The total number of medals awarded is limited to a maximum of 30% of the number of wines entered in the first round.
The National Wine Centre also provides award-winning wineries and winemakers with specially designed graphics that they can uset in showcasing this achievement on their social media or website.

The golden hundred wines of the new edition of the Wine Salon 2024

The awards included not only gold (509), silver (511) and bronze (167) medals, but also a fantastic63 large gold and 13 platinum medals awarded only to truly exceptional wines. The medal gains were then crowned by 12 champion titles, i.e. awards for wines that either overall or in their categories found no competitors at the competitions.

"Last year was again a very successful year for Moravian and Czech wines in terms of awards at international wine competitions. This is good not only as a confirmation of the world-class quality of our wines, but mainly it supports the increasingly strong export ambitions of our winemakers. It was not only in Europe, where our exports go most often, but also in America, Asia and Africa," commented Mgr. Zbyněk Vičar, Director of the Wine Fund. "What is very pleasing is how often our traditional varieties such as M&uuml;ller Thurgau, Riesling and Veltliner Green scored among the whiteand Frankovka and Svatovavrineck&eacute; among the red wines, i.e. the wines most typical for our region, which are not so well known abroad."
The world's most prestigious competitions are held under the auspices of the OIV (International Organisation of Vine and Wineor under the umbrella of VINOFED (World Federation of Major International Wine and Spirit Competitions). The juries are composed of the world's leading tasters, representatives of the UIOE (International Union of Oenologists) and other distinguished and respected experts in the field. In particular, the Wine Fund has long contributed to participation in these most prestigious international competitions, as well as many others. In addition to the entry fee, it also covers the costs of transporting the competition samples around the world. The participation of Moravian and Czech wines is organised by the National Wine Centre, and some of the competitions are also organised by Winesupporter.com (formerly the editorial office of SOMMELIER magazine).

Moravian winemakers took home 5 champions, i.e. the best wines of their categories, from the international and 3 (out of 7 awarded) from the Slovak competition Muvina Pre&scaron;ov. They also did well on American soil, where they won one champion each at the Great American International Wine Competition and the Texas International Wine Competition. The absolute champion of the competition was Moravian wine at the Cool Climate Wine Awards in Poland and the German PIWI International Wine Challenge.

Of the fifty platinum medals awarded to wines from around the world, thirteen went to Moravia at the Great American International Wine Competition in New York.

Our winemakers won a total of 15 major gold medals, the most of any competition, at the Texas International Wine Competition, 12 at the San Francisco International Wine Competition and 9 at the Vinalies Internationales in Paris.

Traditionally, Moravian and Czech wines had the greatest success in the number of medals received at the AWC Vienna. They took away an incredible 302 medals. Including the Seal of Approval, they won an impressive total of 349 awards. At this competition they also achieved the highest number of gold medals - 93.
<h3>Other interesting awards:</h3>
The best wine of the Cool Climate Wine Awards was the P&aacute;lava Straw Wine 2021 from the R&eacute;va Rakvice winery. Interestingly, the same wine, but from the 2020 vintage, came second in last year's competition. The overall second place in the competition went to the Pinot Noir Selection from grapes 2018 from the Vinselekt Michlovsk&yacute; winery.
The best oenologist in the still wine category at the Bacchus Madrid competition was Jiř&iacute; Toman, chief oenologist and cellar master of B\V Vinařstv&iacute; z Milotic u Kyjov. He received the same award in 2021.

The charity Great American Wine Competition awarded a special grant to the Dvůr pod Star&yacute;ma Horama winery fromBor&scaron;ice in the amount of USD 500, which the winery donated to the PAHOP palliative care hospice in Uhersk&eacute; Hradi&scaron;tě.
Another 22 awards were given to Moravian wines at the International Riesling Competition, the German Best of Riesling. The evaluation of the competition is very strict and awards are given only to wines that achieve at least 87 points. The Moravian wines here have been awarded 3 times a respectable 92 points, 1 time 91 and 2 times 90 points.

The winning wine Riesling, late harvest, 2022 comes from Mikulov winery sub-region and won the title of absolute champion by competing with 2628 wines through a three-round evaluation system.

The award ceremony for the winners of the individual categories, the prize for the best collection of the vintage and the winemakers whose wines received the Gold Medal of the Wine Salon of the Czech Republic 2024 will take place on Thursday 15 February 2024 in Valtice. The new tasting exhibition of the Salon of Wines 2024 will open to the public on 1 February.
"The champion may be the best, but his announcement is actually just a small taste of what visitors to the Salon of Wines can look forward to next year. The full results, especially the 100 wines awarded the Gold Medal of the 2024 Wine Salon, which will bewall in the tasting exhibition, but also other wines with the silver medal, will be announced in January. In January, the entire exhibition in the cellars of the Valtice Chateau will be closed, when everything will be prepared so that all those interested can get acquainted with these great wines throughout the year," said Ing. "So if you still want to taste a hundred selected best wines for this year and experience the capital of wine - Valtice a little differently, you have the opportunity only until 16 December," he added.

<h3>Wine Salon - National Wine Competition 2024</h3>
The competition, which this year evaluated Moravian and Czech wines for the twenty-fourth time, has over the years settled on a three-round evaluation system. The first phase of the evaluation usually takes place in the summer months in the individual Moravian wine-growing regions.sub-regions (Znojemsk&aacute;, Mikulovsk&aacute;, Velkopavlovick&aacute;, Slov&aacute;ck&aacute;) and in the Bohemia wine region, where this year 2 628 wines from 371 winemakers were entered. These are the nomination rounds of the National Wine Competition, the first stage of our largest and highest wine competition. This year, 1506 wines from 207 winemakers were nominated for the following 1st, already national, round of the Salon des Vins - National Wine Competition, so that in the 2nd round the expert committees will choose from 400 finalists.
The champion and each holder of the Gold Medal of the Salon des Vins 2024 must thus pass through three rounds of professional evaluation by international tasting test holders according to European ISO standards, which guarantees the objectivity and high standard of the entire competition. Thanks to this, the Salon of Wines - National Wine Competition is a showcase of Czechand Moravian winemaking and the title of champion is the highest achievable standard for wine in the Czech Republic. The prestigious medals of the Salon des Vins - National Wine Competition are an unquestionable guarantee of the highest possible quality of wines.
In addition to the 100 best wines awarded according to the Gold Medal of the Wine Salon of the Czech Republic 2024, the committee will also award silver medals (for wines that have advanced to the second round of evaluation and received a minimum of 84 points). The total number of medals awarded is limited to a maximum of 30% of the number of wines entered in the first round.
The competition itself is followed by the Wine Salon from February of the following year as a year-round tasting exhibition of the best 100 wines. Here, several types of tasting programmes are available, including the so-called "wine tasting". "The best wines of the year can be tasted through a variety of different tasting programmes, including 'free tasting', sommelier-led programmes and individual tastings from a presentation machine. To a limited extent, they can also be purchased there, along with various wine-themed gifts and basic selected sommelier supplies.
