At the prestigious international trade fair ProWein 2025 in D&uuml;sseldorf (16-18. March), 10 diverse wineries will present themselves under the banner of the Czech Republic, offering visitors almost 60 samples directly from the hands of the winemakers themselves on site. More than 100 more will be newly introduced in the free tasting zone. New motto: Czech Republic - the wine country of the future Czech winemaking is developing dynamically and responding to the global challenges of modern winemaking. This is evidenced by this year's motto "Czech wines of the Future", i.e. "Czech Republic - the wine country of the future". This claim underlines the strengths of our winemaking: progressive ecological approaches, high quality and sustainability. Czech winemaking is characterised by minimal use of sprays - on average only eight per year, the lowest in Europe. Winegrowers work with denser plantings to help withstand drought and extreme climaticconditions, and use irrigation mixtures that improve water retention in the vineyards.<img src="https://www.datocms-assets.com/25489/1741859657-783y3v0kag_czech-wines-future.jpeg" width="526" height="526" />The Czech Republic is one of the pioneers in the cultivation of PIWI varieties, which are resistant to disease and enable sustainable viticulture. A new generation of winegrowers is bringing a fresh perspective to traditional methods by drawing inspiration from foreign experience. Another trend in recent years is the introduction of trees into vineyards, which promotes biodiversity and natural ecosystems. Czech wineries are also able to respond flexibly to difficult vintages and maintain stable wine quality. Free tasting zone - an effective way to discover Czech wines A new feature of this year's edition is the extended presentation of more than 100 samples in the so-called Free Tasting Area. These zones have become a trend at international fairs and are proving to be an effective tool for discovering new wine regions. The Free Tasting Area will offer wines from the smallest family wineries to large producers, including winners of prestigious competitions such as Winemaker of the Year and Winery of the Year. In addition to traditional varieties, we will also present PIWI wines and several natural samples, including those certified by DEMETER. What can you look forward to? Visitors to ProWein 2025 will be able to discover a wide variety of Czech varieties, which we describe in three groups:

The Czech Republic will once again present the potential of our wines at the international ProWein fair

The International Grand Champion of the competition and the winner of the sparkling wine category was the bottle fermented Bohemia Sekt Prestige Chardonnay brut 2021 batch 22041C (93.67 points), which also became the most successful wine from the Czech Republic. In a competition of more than 1000 wines from all over the world, Bohemia Sekt also became the most successful winery in the competition when its morewon a total of 3 Grand Gold Medals (in addition to the champion, Bohemia Sekt Louis Girardot brut and Bohemia Sekt Prestige demi sec), 3 Gold and 6 Silver! The Grand Champion Trophy title went to the Israeli Merlot Reserve 2011 from the family winery Jascala of the Kriesh brothers from Galilee, who also won the red wine and kosher wine categories. Wine Cellars Lechovice won the 104 category (under USD 27) and the Grand Gold Medal with P&aacute;lava 2021 berry selection (93.20 points), and two gold for the straw Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 and Riesling 2022, and the U Kapličky winery was twicet gold with wines from the Dalibor series - Tram&iacute;n red TBA selection of bulbs 2023 and P&aacute;lava selection of berries 2023, and the family Josef Dufek's winery from Svatobořice-Mistř&iacute;n got gold for the young Pinot Gris 2024 berry selection. Colleagues from Slovakia also succeeded very well. Ovocin&aacute;r Martin Hrehor won in the fruit wine category, where he won the Grand Gold Medal for the Wine of Black Currants "Letn&aacute; noc" 2024 (93.17 points) and the famous Tokaj winery of Mr. and Mrs. Ostrozovic has two gold medals for Tokajsk&yacute; v&yacute;ber 4 putňov&yacute; 2008 and Lipovina Natural Sweet 2023. Successes of Czech winemakers at the Terravino Israel 2025 competition

The Winery of the Year competition annually recognizes the best domestic wines and producers who know how to serve themand offer them to customers in an interesting environment and add a great experience to it. "The whole competition is meant to be a showcase of the best of what we do in the industry and what we are really proud of. The award-winning winemakers take great care of the land, create artisanally excellent wines, and do a variety of activities for their customers and their positive experience. They are industry leaders who also motivate other winemakers to follow their lead. In the case of &Scaron;těp&aacute;n Maň&aacute;k and this year's other winners, this is true without fail," said Martin Chlad, President of the organizing Association of Winemakers of the Czech Republic. The Maň&aacute;k couple took over their ancestral vineyards in 1992 and gradually built them into one of the most successful wineries in the Czech Republic. Their philosophy is to combine tradition, honest work and innovation in order to preserve authenticity while pushing ecological approaches and quality. They farm 25 hectares of vineyards, among which they consider Ž&aacute;dovsk&yacute; Fěruňk the most important. They specialise in varieties such as Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and are pioneers in the cultivation of PIWI varieties, i.e. new varieties resistant to fungal diseases. "It's always hard to create something, to move something, to build something, and it's even harder to make something out of nothing, to patiently come in every day and add a piece of the mosaic, to put together the whole perfect picture. Here we have managed to build a great thing, precise wines and great gastronomy," said Mojm&iacute;r Baroň, one of the final evaluators. He and his colleagues praised the management of the family winery, its art, the recently built new premises and the fact that the new generation is also involved in the running of the company.' The category of medium wineries (with a production between 50,001 and 200,000 litres of wine) was won this year by the Gotberg winery in Popice known for the architecture of its premises and the impressive view of the P&aacute;lava Mountains, took the top spot. "When you look at the vineyards here, it is clear from the start that they know what they are doing. They leave nothing to chance, they pay absolute attention to the vineyard and this precision and care is then reflected in the bottle and the glass," said Vil&eacute;m Kraus, another of the evaluators. Among the smallest producers (up to 50,000 litres of wine per year), the &Scaron;palek Family Winery, known for its organic approach, care for the landscape and commitment to the region, reigned supreme. The winery was founded in Nov&yacute; &Scaron;aldorf in the Znojmo region shortly after the revolution by a father and two sons. Today, three generations of family members have worked there. In addition to growing grapes for wine, they also enjoy building viewpoints, hanging swings and erecting menhirs. Their motto is that "It's not about collecting the most medals, it's about having the happiest bees in the vineyard." "Personally, I really appreciate the cooperation between generations here. The exchange of ideas between the young innovative members of the family and the older ones allows the winery to move forward continuously. I also like how important the customer is to these winemakers, and how they explain the whole terroir to them, and how they have a perfectly developed program in the vineyardsso that everyone can walk around for hours and hours," emphasised Kl&aacute;ra Koll&aacute;rov&aacute;, national sommelier and chair of the evaluation committee. At the gala evening of the Winery of the Year, the title of Lomax Enologist of the Year was also awarded to the Hustopece winemaker Roman Fabig, who is known for his precise approach and focus on the Sauvignon variety, which he processes in several forms. The award for an important wine personality for a lifetime contribution in the field of viticulture or winemaking - the Prof. Vil&eacute;m Kraus price - was awarded to Josef Vozdeck&yacute;, who is lifelong associated with Bohemia Sekt and its transformation from a permanenttional enterprise into a commercial company, where he and his colleagues gradually created the largest wine-growing group in the Czech Republic. The prize of the students of the Faculty of Horticulture at MENDELU was awarded to &Scaron;těp&aacute;n Maň&aacute;k Winery, which completed the winning hat-trick. The competition is announced and the title of Winery of the Year is awarded by the Union of Winegrowers of the Czech Republic in cooperation with the National Wine Centre, with significant support from the Wine Fund of the Czech Republic, the South Moravian Region and the City of Brno. The absolute winner is Štěpán Maňák. Gotberg and the Spalk family also scored. The title of Enologist of the Year goes to Roman Fabig.

The road to the Salon is long and not at all easy. After all, each gold medalist was successively subjected to three evaluations and the golden hundred came from a record 2825 wines entered at the beginning of the competition. From the sub-regional rounds, a still quite generous 1593 wines were entered into the first national round. The strictest filter of professional tasters, but also, for example, chemical analysesThe most severe scrutiny came later, when only 400 finalists had the opportunity to win the top prize.

The collection of 100 wines with the gold medal of the Wine Salon 2025 includes 62 winemakers and wine companies. The largest representation is Hanzel Winery (5 wines) followed by Ing. Miroslav Volař&iacute;k, &Scaron;těp&aacute;n Maň&aacute;k and DAVINUS (4 wines). The largest number of the total 22 varieties are traditionally represented by Riesling (18), Riesling Walnut (9) and for the first time ever P&aacute;lava (8) is also among the three most frequent varieties, followed by Pinot Blanc (7) and Tramin red (7). The most common red wine is Pinot Noir (6).

The 25th anniversary year
</blockquote>
This year's 25th anniversary edition 25th edition of the competition was held in the established three-round format, where during the first phase the tasters judge the wines ofin the individual Moravian wine sub-regions (Znojemsk&aacute;, Mikulovsk&aacute;, Velkopavlovick&aacute;, Slov&aacute;ck&aacute;) and in the Bohemia wine region. Two national rounds of evaluation follow, which will determine the composition of the Wine Salon for the following year, the Champion and the category winners. The competition itself is followed from February by a year-long tasting exhibition of the best 100 wines in the historic cellar of the Valtice Chateau. Here it is possible to taste the best wines of the year through several types of tasting programmes, including 'free tasting', sommelier-led programmes and individual tasting from a presentation machine. The Wine Salon's tasting exhibition opens on 1 February 2025 and will welcome visitors again almost until Christmas. In addition to the hundred best wines, awarded according to the statute with the gold medal of the Wine Salon of the Czech Republic 2025, the committee also awarded silver medals (for wines that advanced to the second round of evaluation and received a minimum of 84 points). The total number of medals awarded is limited to a maximum of 30% of the number of wines entered in the first round.

Wine Salon 2025: Record number of wines competed for the gold medal

Thanks to the positive feedback from last year, the wines will again be divided into three sections:
Bubbles &amp; Natural &amp; PIWI
- All three of these categories are united by their ever-growing popularity around the world and the Czech Republic is no exception! Alongside sparkling wines of all kinds will be available DEMETER-certified samples and a range of natural and low-intervention wines.
Local Darlings
&ndash; This designation was given to wines made from our most typical varieties, namely Gr&uuml;ner Veltliner, Riesling, Blaufr&auml;nkisch&nbsp;and St. Laurent. Visitors from all over the world will have the opportunity to become acquainted with our unique variety, P&aacute;lava, which will be represented in both dry and naturally sweet variants.
The Internationals
- They can be found in vineyards all over the world: Rieslings, Sauvignons, Chardonnays, and Pinots Blanc and Noir. Wines of these varieties born in the Czech Republic impress with their unmistakable fruitiness, great acidity, and distinctive spiciness.
<h3>Czech Exposition</h3>
The Czech booth (E20), located in Hall 13, is sure to impress with its modern and original design by the well-known CHYBIK + KRISTOF ASSOCIATED ARCHITECTS. It can be easily recognized by its motif of circles and cylinders, which symbolize winemaking itself.
Each day, in the morning and afternoon, visitors to the fair will meet a different group of winemakers. Alongside some of our country's largest companies, medium and small-sized wineries also going to be well-represented. Among them are winners and finalists of prestigious competitions and all of them are united by a proactive approach to exporting abroad. Many of them are already exporting their wines all over the world. We could mention the already successful representation of our wines in Canada, Japan, and in the demanding market of London.
<h3>Masterclass</h3>
This year the renowned Czech National Sommelier and Weinakademiker, Kl&aacute;ra Koll&aacute;rov&aacute; is going to host a special masterclass titled Czech Jewels of Central Europe. In this exciting session, participants will have the exceptional opportunity to enjoy a tasting with a curated selection of 14 wine samples. Under the expert guidance of Kl&aacute;ra Koll&aacute;rov&aacute;, participants will discover the unique characteristics of each grape variety and gain valuable insights into the rich diversity of flavors, aromas, and terroirs of the Czech Republic. The masterclass will take place in Hall 13, on 10 March at 10 a.m.

Wines from Moravia and Bohemia at PROWEIN 2024

THAYA winery is located in the village of Havran&iacute;ky near Znojmo, where it has built a modern complex. Its basic philosophy is respect for nature and respect for the region, which after all is confirmed by the name of the winery, which in German means the river Dyje. For the first time, the winery participated in the competition in 2020, and in 2021 their chief oenologist Ing. Jakub Smrčka became Enologist of the Year, in 2022 the winery won the category of medium-sized wineries to now reach the title of the highestThe winery is now the winner of the medium winery category, and at the same time as last year.
"We run our winery with respect for naturě, with an emphasis on quality raw material, i.e. grapes, and with respect for the region, and this is further proof that we do it well. We will continue to do this, we certainly don't want to fall asleep, because the competition, which is actually friends from other wineries, is very strong. Our whole industry is moving forward at a rocket pace," said Ing. Jakub Smrčka, enologist of THAYA winery. "I am also glad to see that Znojmo has made a significant mark in this year's competition thanks to the award of Mr Vajčner, with whom I started my career at Znov&iacute;n Znojmo. Znojmo was perhaps a bit sleepy at first, but now it is growing tremendously in terms of tourism and wine and has a huge potential for the future," he added.

The small winery category was dominated by V&aacute;lka Winery, the oldest organic family winery in Moravia, located in Nosislav near Hustopeče. In the large winery category, the winery &Scaron;těp&aacute;n Maň&aacute;k from Ž&aacute;dovice in the Hodon&iacute;n region won the first place. It is also a family winery, but it has grown into a large and successful winery in Slov&aacute;cko, which has recently opened modern representative premises.

In addition to the absolute winner, other awards were traditionally announced under the guidance of moderator Mark Eben at the Brno Observatory and Planetarium. The award "LOMAX Enologist of the Year 2023 " - the prize for a young winemaker, enologist under 40 years of age - was awarded to Karel Novotný from the winery of the same name, whose wine is e.g. Novotnovo, who is also an oenologist at &Scaron;těp&aacute;n Maň&aacute;k winery. The "Prof. Vil&eacute;m Kraus, CSc. Award" for an outstanding wine personality for his or her lifetime contribution to viticulture or winemaking was awarded to Ing. Pavel Vajčner, who for thirty years held the position of director of the Znov&iacute;n Znojmo winery, one of the largest and most successful wineries in the Znojmo region. The "MENDEL Faculty of Horticulture Student Award" goes to Hor&aacute;k, a small boutique winery from the village of Vrbice in the Velkopavlovice region. And the prize for the "Act of the Year 2023" was awarded to the Dunajovsk&eacute; Kopce winegrowers' association for its exemplary association activities in the field of development of viticulture, winemaking and wine trade, consisting in the continuousThe constant search for new creative forms of cooperation and promotion of the local product at the level of all members of different sizes and market importance.

 Three-stage evaluation

The award ceremony was preceded by a three-stage evaluation, where first a combination of the JUNIOR and SENIOR jury judging put the winery in the final and then the expert jury in a personalvisit to all the finalists' establishments, the wineries decided which best fulfilled the set criteria and, in particular, fulfilled the main idea of the competition, i.e. to exceed the common practice in the industry and to move it forward in the long term.
Traditionally, nine wineries competed in the finals. These were the small wineries V&aacute;lka, V&aacute;clav and &Scaron;palek. The medium-sized wineries were THAYA, Sonberk and KOLBY. And finally the large wineries &Scaron;těp&aacute;n Maň&aacute;k, Vladim&iacute;r Tetur and CH&Acirc;TEAU VALTICE - Vinn&eacute; sklepy Valtice.

THAYA from Znojmo region becomes the winery of the year 2023

It is no coincidence that the Wine Salon is called the showcase of Moravian and Czech winemaking. It not only represents the pinnacle of wine art, but also equally represents both wine regions and different wine styles. Wines from a total of 54 winemakers and wine companies are represented here according to the origin of the grapes in the individual wine sub-regions, i.e. 31 wines ofn come from Mikulovsk&aacute;, 29 from Velkopavlovick&aacute;, 23 from Slov&aacute;ck&eacute;, 14 from Znojemsk&aacute;, 2 from Litoměřick&aacute; and 1 from Mělnick&aacute;. This year, 26 varieties will be available for tasting in the form of 88 white, 10 red and 10 red78 wines will be dry, 6 semi-dry, 11 semi-sweet and 5 sweet. There will also be 2 sparkling wines.

"The charm of the Wine Salon lies above all in the opportunity to compare individual wines. The fact that these are, without exception, first-class wines is an obvious condition from which the myriad possibilities of enjoying one place at theone place, at one time and in one mood to enjoy Moravian and Czech wines and to find the most interesting ones according to one's individual taste. There can be many keys to this - according to winemakers, varieties, regional specifics, residual sugar, etc., etc. There is a lot to take in in one visit," said Petr Gond&aacute;&scaron;, Salon manager from the National Wine Centre, which organises the competition and also manages the tasting exhibition, adding: "over the 24 years of its existence, the Salon has built a strong position among lovers of our wines, but more and more often it attracts also lay people who The Wine Salon is also becoming more popular with lay people who are just beginning to discover the beauty of wine or who have chosen it as a tourist destination on a holiday or trip. This is exactly what we want to achieve in the long term and what we are very pleased about. To be here not just for connoisseurs, but to be able to enthuse everyone who is willing to listen to the voice of Moravian and Czech wines."

The largest number of wines in this year's Wine Salon is the Bzenec Chateau Winery (10) followed by the wineries Ing. Among the varieties are Riesling (14), Chardonnay (12) and Pinot Noir with Riesling (9). Of the blue varieties, Pinot Noir (4) and Frankovka (3). In terms of quality, late harvests (54) and grape selections (29) clearly lead the way, with the 2022 (44) and 2021 (42) wines dominating in terms of vintage. In addition to the golden hundred wines, which are on display throughout the year, it is also possible to seasonally taste selected wines with the Silver Medal of the Salon or, for example, ros&eacute; wines, sparkling wines, etc.
The wines awarded with the gold medal of the Wine Salon 2024 and presented in the exhibition of the same name can be tasted and comparedthroughout the year until almost Christmas in free or professional sommelier-led tastings. Of course, it is also possible to buy selected wines in limited quantities. There is also an educational exhibition dedicated to winemaking and a shop selling gifts, wine literature, tasting glasses and sommelier's supplies.
