The year 2011 brought to Moravian and Bohemian wine-makers a lot of significant success and awards in international competitions. In three of them our wines obtained the title of absolute champion and this fact confirms a long trend of Moravian and Bohemian wines heading towards the world top. Presentations of local wines were financially supported by the Winegrowers’ Fund with the organisational help of the National Wine Centre.
The first last year’s trip of Moravian and Bohemian wines was to Paris to the Vinalies Internationales competition. Although the year 2010 wasn’t easy for wine-growers, fortunately it didn’t affect quality of Moravian and Bohemian wines. From the total number of 119 samples the Czech Republic won 5 gold and 30 silver medals. The biggest success belonged to the winery of Josef Dufek that won two gold medals for Pinot Gris, selection from berries 2009 and Italian Riesling, late gathered 2010 and two silver medals for Aurelius, late gathered 2010 and Pinot Gris, selection from grapes 2010. The wines awarded in Paris were subsequently mentioned in the 1000 Vins du Monde – the guide through the best world wines.
Another French competition Chardonnay du Monde brought phenomenal success to Josef Valihrach, whose selection from grapes 2006 won the prize for the third best Chardonnay in the world. His sample of Chardonnay, selection from grapes 2007 barrique won the bronze medal.
In the Concours Mondial Bruxelles competition the Czech Republic has won 21 medals already for the two last years. Josef Valihrach was again very successful with Chardonnay, selection from grapes 2007 that won the great gold medal. The Czech Republic has won such a high award for the first time in history. Overall Moravian and Bohemian wines gained one great gold, two gold and eighteen silver medals.
The series of prestigious international competitions continued in May in London at the Decanter World Wine Awards. Our red wines achieved historic success there. Twelve of eighteen registered red wine samples were awarded. It is known in the world that our white Moravian and Bohemian wines are of the top quality, however, the proud owners of wine houses in the whole world will have to get used to the fact that we defeated France, Italy or South America also in red wines. From the total number of 118 registered samples Moravian and Bohemian wines won 10 silver and 33 bronze medals and 40 diplomas. Tomáš Krist with ten awards and the Zámecké vinařství Bzenec with nine awards were among the most successful wineries.
The Muvina 2011 competition that was hold in Prešov in Slovakia was dominated by our sweet wines. Two most precious medals – great gold – went to Vinné sklepy Lechovice and Vinné sklepy Valtice.
At the end of June Moravian and Bohemian wines set out for a journey to overseas to the U.S.A. and it was certainly worth it. In the San Francisco International Wine Competition our winery Vinařství Líbal s.r.o. from Horní Dunajovice won the title of the best Sauvignon in the competition. This prize was an important award also for the VOC wine marking system, which first representative broke through the big international competition. Moravian and Bohemian wines gained 79 medals that means even by three more than in 2010.
In July the local wines set off to neighbouring Poland that this year hosted the “travelling” competition of Vinoforum. The competition’s aim is to compare the wines from Central Europe to the rest of the world. The Rhine Riesling, ice wine 2009 from Znovín Znojmo a.s. became the Champion of the competition.
German MUNDUS Vini is surely one of the most prestigious world wine competitions especially thanks to its very strict point assessment. However, Moravian and Bohemian wines won 11 medals. Three medals went to Vinné sklepy Valtice and the winery of Vinselekt Michlovský a.s. defended gold medal from 2010, this time for semi-sweet Italian Riesling, selection from berries 2009.
The autumn tourney followed in Vienna at the AWC Vienna. Moravian and Bohemian wine-makers sent there 292 samples, out of which the unbelievable number of 241 won some award. The most successful was the Vinařství U Kapličky winery with four gold and five silver medals.
The end of the year belonged to the Terravino competition that was hold in Israel. The Čech winery from Tvrdonice with ice wine Sauvignon 2010 became the absolute winner, international champion of the competition and the category champion. The same winery succeeded with rosé Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 that won great gold medal and the title of rosé category champion. In total the Czech Republic won 4 great gold medals, 13 gold and 19 silver medals.
The year 2011 is undoubtedly considered by wine experts as very successful. Moravian and Bohemian wine-makers followed in success of the last years, and they even improved both in quality and quantity. The successful journey through international competitions is a sign that our wines are not only quality but above all unique and distinguishable in a wide competition of the top world labels.
