Tasting exhibition at the Wine Salon of the Czech Republic opens on 2nd March 2013

Prague – Representatives of the National Wine Centre and the Union of Winemakers of the Czech Republic have published the results of the Wine Salon of the Czech Republic – National Wine Competition for 2013, the largest and most important wine contest in the Czech Republic. The victorious wines in their individual categories and the best overall collection of wines in the competition were made public, as was the list of the one hundred best-rated wines that have been awarded the title of Wine Salon of the Czech Republic together with the competition's absolute Champion.

From a total of 1622 competing wines the title of absolute Champion was awarded to Chardonnay 2011 late harvest from Zámecké vinařství Bzenec. At the same time this Champion became the winner in the dry and semi-sweet wines category. The grapes used for this cuvée originated in the Klinky vineyard in the wine commune of Vracov in the Slovácko wine sub-region. The Champion wine is marked by its intensive, though at the same time subtle nose with honeyed overtones. The nicely structured full palate with crisp acidity and hints of ripe citrus fruit has enabled this wines to pass through three rounds of judging sessions right up to the very top of our most prestigious wine competition.

Amongst the reds the highest marks went to Saint Laurent barrique 2011 late harvest from the MORAVÍNO, s.r.o.

In the semi-sweet wine category the jury agreed on Sauvignon 2011 selection of grapes from Vinařství U Kapličky.

The winner in the sweet white wine category was Pinot Gris 2009 ice wine from ZNOVÍN ZNOJMO, a.s.

In the rosé and blanc des noirs category the jury selected Rosé Růžený 2011 VOC from the winemaker Ing. Jan Stávek, PhD.

The winner among the quality sparkling wines was Louis Girardot brut 2008, quality sparkling wine s.o. from the BOHEMIA SEKT group.

The prize for the best collection of wines overall was awarded to the company Zámecké vinařství Bzenec s.r.o.

"This year's display of the elite among Moravian and Czech wines went to confirm the quality of the 2011 vintage which represented 77% of this year's Wine Salon entries," commented Ing. Pavel Krška, director of the the National Wine Centre.

About the wines in the Wine Salon

The proportion of the representation was: 64 white wines, 33 red wines, 1 rosé and 2 sparkling wines.

In all, 25 various single grape varieties and 6 blends were entered in the contest. The most successful cultivars this year were Riesling with 13 representatives, followed by Sauvignon Blanc with 10 samples and Chardonnay with 8 representatives.

As for the qualitative classification in this year's edition of the Wine Salon of the Czech Republic, most wines were in the late-harvest category (56) followed by 24 wines listed as selection of grapes.

The highest number of wines this year came from the 2011 vintage which counted for 77 wines, whilst the 2009 and 2010 vintages accounted for 12 and 5 wines, respectively. The oldest wine in the competition was from the 2005 vintage.

This year the most successful entrants were as follows: Zámecké vinařství Bzenec s.r.o. with 8 awarded wines, Vinné Sklepy Valtice a.s. with 7 awards, PATRIA Kobylí a.s. with 6 wines and Vinselekt Michlovský a.s. with 5 awarded wines. In all 54 wine producers will exhibit their wines in this year's Wine Salon.

The best represented wine sub-regíon in this edition of the Wine Salon was the Mikulov wine sub-region with a total of 28 wines, but it should also be noted that this sub-region is the largest area under vine and that the proportional representation of samples in the Wine Salon is commensurate with the size of each individual sub-region.

For detailed statistics see the table in the Final Results of the Wine Salon of the Czech Republic 2013 file (Konečné výsledky Salon vín ČR 2013.xls).

About the Wine Salon of the Czech Republic competition

In the early rounds of the competition where wines are assessed in the Velké Pavlovice, Mikulov, Slovácko and Znojmo wine sub-regions and also in the Czech wine region, out of the 1622 samples the best 1051 were selected, which thus qualified for the first national round of the competition. Subsequently the best 200 then did battle to reach the 2nd round, from where the 100 best wines were awarded the title of Wine Salon of the Czech Republic, absolute Champion, winner in individual categories and the title for the best overall collection in the competition.

The new edition of the year-round tasting exhibition of the Wine Salon of the Czech Republic will be opened to the general public on Saturday 2nd March 2013 as ever in the chateau in Valtice.

Selection of tasters and the evaluation system

Each year only the best tasters, wired up to the most up-to-date computer system, sit on the committees. Along with this, the multi-round assessment and the guarantee of the union of Winemakers of the Czech Republic go to assure the objectivity as to the selection of what are really the best wines in Moravia and the Czech lands.

Another unique and absolutely essential attribute for the contest is the requirement for prior bottling of the wines entered in the competition and the taking and putting of samples under seal directly from the producer's premises by the competition organiser who has the right to select any 6 bottles of the enrolled batch at random.
