Description of the route
After Mikulov, Valtice forms the second wine centre in the Mikulov sub-wine region. The wine school established in Valtice in 1873 is the oldest wine school not only in the Czech Republic, but also in Lower Austria, where Valtice belonged prior to the year 1920. A Wine Academy has also operated here for several years now which, by the means of courses and its own publishing activities, has the task of educating future sommeliers – specialists in wine service. In the cellars of the local baroque chateau is the National Wine Salon, where you can see and also sample an extensive collection of the finest Czech and Moravian wines.
The route of the educational trail starts out in close proximity to the chateau right in Valtice‘s main square. It is perhaps best to study a map of the trail in advance at the starting point. From here the trail leads through the chateau grounds to the extensive vineyards of Valtice. The most substantial all year-round vineyard work is mentioned on the panel here. From the highest point of the educational trail, on the hill called Rajstna (Reisten) above Valtice and its romantic colonnade one can easily see the whole of the Lednice-Valtice area, which was placed on the UNESCO heritage list due to its uniqueness. From here the trail continues via vineyards with many further stops up as far as the building of the Wine School and then returns to the historical part of the town. Here you can end the walk in one of the rows of wine cellars and verify the information given on the panels in practice.
