Moravian and Bohemian wines achieved great success on the international scene last year

Press release from January 15, 2009

Last year the Moravian and Bohemian wine-growers managed to follow the great success from the previous years. In the competitions that took place all over the world the Moravian and Bohemian wine-growers achieved many prestigious awards and once again they proved that they belong among the world top.

The last year started great for the local wine-growers. The prestigious Vinalies Internationalies in Paris brought to the Czech Republic the wonderful sixth place in the number of medals awarded. On our tail we left such wine-growing powers like Australia or New Zealand. Moravian wines achieved six gold and sixteen silver medals from the total of twenty-two medals.

In March Moravian and Bohemian wines were sent to Italian Verona. More than 3400 wines from over 30 countries of the whole world took part in the competition. Also 13 wine-growers from Moravia with 48 wine samples participated. Altogether they gained 20 valuable medals.

In April our wine-growers did well in French Bordeaux. On one of the most prestigious wine exhibitions in the world, Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, 6 189 samples from 48 countries fought for the precious metals. The Czech Republic was represented by 72 wines and 6 of them were awarded gold and 11 silver medals.

At the end of May we got great news from London, where our wines scored again in the prestigious International Wine Challenge, held already for the 25th time. Fifteen Moravian and Bohemian wine-growers came to present altogether 55 wine samples. 23 out of that then returned home with an award. The most successful was Znovín Znojmo that won a silver medal for their Rhine Riesling, ice wine from the year 2007, and Bohemia Canopus Winery from the Velkopavlovická sub-region, which also won silver for their Rhine Riesling from the year 2005. Another competition, which was held in May in London, was the Decanter World Wine Awards, where our Znovín Znojmo scored again and achieved gold medal for their Rhine Riesling, straw wine 2006.

On the turn of May and June in Slovenian Ljubljana a prestigious world wine competition took place. 578 samples from 19 countries applied. Moravian and Bohemian wine-growers won 10 gold and 8 silver medals. In Slovakia on June 11-13 our wine-growers achieved 58 significant awards in the international competition MUVINA 2008. The Muscat du Monde 2008 international competition of muscatel wines brought a great success to our Muscatel Yellow – Moravian Land Wine, the year 2007 from Znovín Znojmo, which was among the best ten wines of the competition.

Some new awards also came from the International Wine Competition San Francisco. 1 150 wine-growers from 21 countries took part in the assessment that was held in Los Angeles. The Czech Republic was represented by 26 wines from 6 wineries. The success exceeded expectations, because 14 wines were awarded (2 silver, 12 bronze medals). The most successful wine-grower was Petr Skoupil of Velké Bílovice, who achieved five awards and the prestigious award “Best of Nation”.

The next exhibition was Mundus Vini in German Neustadt. 13 wineries with 48 samples from the Czech Republic participated and 12 of them were awarded. Out of that number were 4 gold and eight silver medals.

We brought gold also from the Vinoforum competition in Slovenian Maribor. Gold medals belonged to the wines of the Secondary viticulture school and SOUZ Valtice, Chardonnay 2006, Valihrach Winery, Merlot 2006, Znovín Znojmo a.s., Pinot Gris 2007.

Our wine-growers achieved a significant success in one of the most popular wine competitions in the world. 7 959 wines from 1422 producers from the whole world participated in the Austrian AWC Vienna. The Czech Republic was represented by a record number of 159 samples, which is the highest number in the history of the participation in the international competitions. Our wine-growers achieved a tremendous success in Vienna. The record number of 140 wines, i.e. fantastic 88% gained some of the medals or the “seal of approval” diplomas. After two successes of Vinselekt Michlovský in the past years, Vinné sklepy Valtice a.s. won through the 100 best wineries in the world this year. At the end our wine-growers carried off 11 gold medals. Three gold medals belong to Vinné sklepy and the same number of gold medals Znovín Znojmo achieved.

In Israel the Moravian and Bohemian wine-growers achieved an incredible success. The Absolute International Champion of the Terravino Mediterranean International Wine & Spirits Challenge after three days of anonymous assessment by international commissioners from 14 countries is Pálava Private Selection 2007, Selection from berries produced by Vinselekt Michlovský from Rakvice, which at the same time won one of 18 Double Gold Medals. “I don’t remember a case that Moravian wine would won an Absolute International Champion in any of the big world competitions,” commented Dr. Luboš Bárta, a member of international committee and a partner of the competition.
