In one of the largest and most important wine competitions in the world, Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, our winemakers have yet again succeeded dramatically in taking the stage with the publishing of the final results. Just like last year, they have brought 21 medals home. The most prestigious of these was the great gold medal earned by wine producer Josef Valihrach for his Chardonnay, special selection of grapes 2007. This is the first time ever one of our wineries has managed to bring a great gold medal from Concours Mondial de Bruxelles.
The expert committees also awarded a gold medal to Vinařství Baloun from Velké Pavlovice for his Welschriesling late harvest 2010. Vinařství Baloun was also in receipt of two silver medals. Vinařství Volařík of Mikulov can be very proud after receiving the second gold medal awarded to this country in the competition for his Chardonnay special selection of noble berries (TBA) 2008. In all our wine producers won one great gold, two gold and 18 silver medals (see below for results).
"Concours Mondial de Bruxelles was held this year in Luxembourg – a truly beautiful wine country and was, as ever, organised to perfection. Among other activities the organisers carry out regular statistical evaluations of the ratings given by every individual taster. The judging took place in the pleasing environs of the LuxExpo exhibition complex in Luxembourg and was undertaken by well over 250 tasters from across the globe. I would like to add my appreciation for the professional way in which the evaluation of wines was organised which, taking into consideration the enormous number of samples present, is by no means an easy undertaking. At the same time I would like to congratulate all medal winners from the Czech Republic, above all Jožka Valihrach, whose great gold medal is a really exceptional achievement. This is the very first occasion that the Czech Republic has won a great gold medal at the CMB," said Pavel Krška, director of the National Wine Centre, who took part in the international tasting jury of CMB.
Also judging wines on behalf of the Czech Republic were Helena Baker and John Law Baker. The collective presence of Czech and Moravian wines was organised with the assistance of the National Wine Centre with the financial support of the Wine Fund of the Czech Republic.
This years' Concours Mondial de Bruxelles received an unbelievable 7 386 entries from 49 countries. Among these were 113 samples from 29 wineries from the Czech Republic.
The contest took place for the first time in 1994 in Bruges, when a "mere" 861 samples were entered. In following years the judging took place in Brussels and other Belgian cities. The Concours Mondial de Bruxelles has long been seen as one of the most prestigious of all world wine competitions, which is why in 2006 the organisers decided to confirm its international standing by moving the competition from Belgium to other important European centres. They began with Lisbon and this was followed by Maastricht, Bordeaux, Valencia, last year in Palermo and this year Luxembourg.
