Record number of awards from London for red wines of Moravia

A total of 118 samples from 27 wineries in the Czech Republic were entered in the Decanter competiton of which 26 received an award. Our wines were awarded a total of 10 silver medals, 33 bronze medals and 40 commendations, thus meaning recognition for over two-thirds of the samples entered.

White wines won 68 awards in all, rosés 3 and red wines 12, of which 2 silver and 6 bronze medals and 4 commendations.

"This is the first time that so many Moravian red wines have succeeded in such a prominent international competition, which goes to show how we in Moravia are capable of producing top red wines which can daringly go out and compete with wines from the traditional wine superpowers," commented Marek Babisz, head sommelier at the National Wine Centre - which shared in the organisational aspects of the participating wines - referring to the success achieved by red Moravian wines. The participation of these wines was supported financially by the Wine Fund of the Czech Republic.

Most successful among our wine producers were undoubtedly Tomáš Krist with ten awards (7 bronze medals and 3 commendations) and Zámecké vinařství Bzenec, recipient of nine prizes (1 silver medal, 4 bronzes and 4 commendations).

In total 12,252 wines entered the Decanter World Wine Awards 2011 competition (beating last year’s record of 10,983). These came from 44 countries from around the world. Wines were judged by 211 top-rate tasters, among whom 58 with the title MW (Master of Wine).

The success of our winemakers in this competition is significant, especially in view of their future standing on the British market. It is also a signal for others among our red wine producers to show more of their products on the international competition scene. Only on the most elevated competitive stages can they prove that they belong up there, on the summit, alongside the best of Europe in all types of wine without exception whatsoever.
