The best Sauvignon Blanc trophy in the USA went to a VOC wine from Moravia

Moravian and Czech wine producers not only won the title of best Sauvignon Blanc in the competition but also one great gold medal, 5 gold, 24 silver and 50 bronze medals, making a total of three more medals than last year.

"Our wine producers already proved themselves last year in San Francisco, but to be awarded the prize of the best wine of its variety is, alongside all the other medals, a truly unforeseen success," commented Pavel Krška, the director of the National Wine Centre, on the unique success achieved by our wine producers.

The great gold medal and the title of best Sauvignon Blanc, awarded from among a strong international challenge of 240 wines of this grape variety from across the globe, is an exceptional recognition not only of its producer Vinařství Líbal s.r.o. of Horní Dunajovice, but also of all the other superb Moravian and Czech Savignon Blancs and their creators. Furthermore this award makes this Sauvignon Blanc the first ever VOC to have done so well on an international stage.

"Our winning Sauvignon Blanc is a highly intense aromatic wine, which, for a 2010 vintage, has a very harmonious balance between sugars and acidity. It is typical for a VOC Znojmo wine in that it fulfils precisely the expectations inherent in its creation and its success on the world stage only goes to confirm that we have set out on the right path," remarked Marek Líbal, the winemaker, on receiving this prestigíous award.

Alongside Vinařství Líbal who, apart from the great gold (Sauvignon Blanc 2010 VOC), also received one silver (Grüner Veltliner, ice wine 2005) and one bronze medal (Gewurztraminer, special selection of grapes 2009), Vinařství Petr Skoupil also tasted success with one gold (Sauvignon Blanc, late harvest 2010), three silver (Grüner Veltliner, kabinet 2010, Riesling, late harvest 2010, Blaufränkisch, late harvest 2009) and no fewer than five bronze medals (Blauer Portugieser, late harvest 2009, Pálava, late harvest 2010, Welschriesling, kabinet 2010, Müller-Thurgau, kabinet 2010, Dornfelder, late harvest 2009). Three silver (Sylvaner, late harvest 2010, Neuburger, late harvest 2010, Grüner Veltliner, special selection of grapes 2009) and four bronze medals (Neuburger, special selection of grapes 2009, Müller-Thurgau, special selection of grapes 2010, Grüner Veltliner, late harvest 2009, Welschriesling, late harvest 2009) went to the Vinné sklepy Valtice winery, while Vinařství Josef Dufek who was awarded two golds (Grüner Veltliner, late harvest 2010, Blauer Portugieser, late harvest 2009), was also the recipient of two bronze medals (Sauvignon Blanc, ice wine 2010, Riesling, ice wine 2010).


With its creation of VOC in 2009, Znojmo became the first place in the Czech Republic in which the local winemakers' association established a designation for the wines of a given region - VOC (Vína Originální Certifikace), meaning Wine of Original Certification, with the emphasis on superior quality requirements. This was seen as a further step in helping to orientate the Czech consumer in the exceptionally diverse market of Moravian and Czech wines. The very first VOC wine (Riesling, VOC, 2009, Vinařství Lahofer) was already declared champion in the Znojmo wine sub-region in 2010, and we have seen that this year's VOC should be awarded a gold medal and title of best Sauvignon Blanc in the biggest and most respected international wine contests in the USA.
