The Znojmo sub-region

vína z Moravy

The Znojmo sub-region lies in the rain shadow of the Czech-Moravian highlands which were created by Archaeozoic rocky formations, resulting in stony soils particularly in the northern part of this sub-region.

The town of Znojmo has always been famed as a wine centre which is evidenced by a labyrinth of long wine-cellar corridors dug directly beneath the town. In the town's vicinity are some first-rate vineyard sites which have gravelly sub-soil covered in part by loess, in places even with clayey soils. These vineyards lie in the stretch leading from Kraví Hora in the direction of Hnánice. South from Znojmo along the border with Austria we can find the renowned vineyard tracts in the communes of Šatov, Chvalovice, Vrbovec, Hnízdo, Slup, Jaroslavice, as far as Hrušovany nad Jevišovkou, the majority having loess or gravelly sandy soils. To the east along the Dyje (Thaya) river we have the vineyard slopes of Tasovice and Hodonice. At the central part of the Znojmo sub-region lie several important vineyard areas along the Únanovka and Jevišovka valleys with the well-known wine villages of Těšetice, Lechovice and Borotice. Typical for Znojmo is the production of white aromatic wines.  Apart from Grüner Veltliner, which is the principal grape variety here, Müller-Thurgau, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pálava all prosper in this area. An excellent quality is also achieved by all the Pinot family - Blanc, Gris and Noir.
