Phenomenal Success for Moravian Winemakers in France and Monaco
At the third edition of the competition for wines of terroir, which takes place in Brignoles, the capital of the “Provence Verte“ or “Green Provence“ region, Moravian winemakers Radomil Baloun and Josef Dufek were awarded diamond medals, which is the highest appraisal given by the international jury asembled in this part of the world tradionally associated with rosé wines. Radomil Baloun likewise excelled in not too distant Monte Carlo, in the ninth year of the competition Femmes et Vins du Monde. Together with Tomáš Krist he took several diamond and a host of silver medals.
Concours International des Vins de Terroir is a contest aimed at wines with specific geographical indication of origin coming from any part of the world. The aim is to demonstrate to the public not only what role terroir plays in the making of a wine but to stimulate a broadening of wine culture generally on an international level, but also to draw attention to its connection with gastronomy and wine tourism. Terroir is an often both a mistakenly applied and a misunderstood term. It is in fact a barely translateable word, emanating from the French terre (land, earth), but it applies not just to the influence of location and soil conditions on a given wine, but also takes into consideration a range of other factors: specific microclimate, varietal composition, tradition, history and even the winemaker’s ownsavoir-faire.
Moravia, and especially the terroir of its sub-region Slovácko, must have enchanted the international jury, which had been composed of judges from such exotic locations as China, Morocco, Ukraine and Burkina Faso, to the extent that they awarded our wines three diamond medals - Terroir de diamant - in all. Muscat Ottonel 2013 from Josef Dufek of Svatobořice-Mistřín was in the end the second highest rated wine in the competition, closely followed by a wine made from the Děvín grape variety, vintage 2013 from the Baloun winery in Velké Pavlovice.

The next edition of the Concours International des Vins de Terroir competition will take place in the southern French town of Brignoles on 20th and 21st February 2016.

The Femmes et Vins du Monde (Women and Wines of the World) competition is held annually in the Principality of Monaco. This year was the ninth edition and the Baloun winery from Velké Pavlovice again received the highest award – Nova de Diamant, together with the wine producer from Milotice, Tomáš Krist, who also took part for the second time, receiving altogether three diamond medals with his Sauvignon Blanc 2014 becoming the champion of the entire tournament with a total of 93 points, the highest marks for any wine in the competition. Meanwhile five silver medals - Nova d’Argent - were also heading for Milotice. But Radomil Baloun was not to be outdone with a traditional diamond award for his Müller-Thurgau 2014 and a silver for Cuvée Baloun from the 2006 vintage, which makes for an uninterrupted nine-year sequence of medal successes.

The tenth jubilee edition of the Femmes et Vins du Monde competition, is to be held in Monaco under the patronage of Prince Albert II on 2nd and 3rd March 2016, to be followed immediately by the Salon Pro Femmes et Vins du Monde and Salon Grand Public displays on 4th and 5th March.
