Between 13th and 15th October we saw the twelfth edition of the international wine competition "Emozioni dal Mondo: Merlot e Cabernet Insieme" (Emotions of the World: Merlot and Cabernet Together), which took place as usual in the graceful city of Bergamo, wine capital of Lombardy, the heart of the Valcalepio DOC region. This competition is dedicated to grapes used (as in Valcalepio) for the production red Bordeaux blends, the only such event in the world’s wine calendar. This year the judging took place on Friday 15th October 2016 in the magnificent setting of the Palazzo Maestri in Cenate Sopra on the very first hills where the Alps actually begin, just north from Bergamo.
Amazingly this competition is one of only five wine contests in Italy (population over 50 million inhabitants) having an international content (the Czech Republic can boast many more by far). The event is organised by the Conzorzio Tutela Valcalepio and is under the patronage of the O.I.V. – Organisation Internationale de la Vigne et du Vin with an O.I.V. delegate present each year to oversee the competition – this year the organisation’s vice-president Claudia Quini from Argentina (see photo).
236 wine samples from 21 countries participated in the competition which was judged by 83 jurors coming from 27 different countries. 41 judges were Italian, while 42 came from the following countries: Argentina, Bulgaria, China, Colombia, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Great Britain, Hungary, Israel, Japan, Latvia, Malta, Moldova, Peru, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Serbia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and USA. In line with O.I.V. – which allow for only 30% medals – several wines were not included on the prize list who would otherwise have received gold medals, whilst no silver medals at all were handed out. The 71 gold medals awarded, given to wines scoring 85 or more points, went to wines from Argentina, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Georgia, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa and Turkey.
Our Moravian Baloun Winery of Velké Pavlovice once again excelled with their Merlot 2015 from the Nadzahrady vineyard which received gold and also taking one of the awards given by the jury members who are also wine journalists – Premio della Stampa.
Again the wines were served by students of the IPSSAR Hospitality School of San Pellegrino Terme, who excelled in their enthusiastic professional approach.
On Saturday 15th October the wines with medals were available for tasting at the Astino monastery in the city centre.
This contest is the only such in the world to be followed by a symposium of experts. This year the discussion took place in the Bergamo Chamber of Commerce in the Piazza della Libertà and covered the subject of the future of viticulture and oenology.
