Outstanding success of our winemakers: Platinum medal at Decanter World Wine Awards 2018

Moravian winemakers succeeded in yet another prestigious world competition Decanter World Wine Awards in which the Gotberg Winery won a platinum medal for Riesling, late harvest 2016. Moravian wines were awarded a total of a further two gold, 19 silver and 43 bronze medals. The collective presentation of Moravian and Czech wines was organisationally assured by the National Wine Centre with financial support of the Wine Fund.

Including the honourable diplomas the Czech Republic received a total of 93 awards in London. So, in an annual competition of more than 17 000 wines from across the globe, Moravian wines more than stood out.

"The victorious Riesling late harvest 2016 is a wine delivering a typical varietal nose of apricots packed with added tones of citrus fruit. The wine is light with a juicy acidity. The grapes from which this wine was produced came from our own vineyard, planted in 2004,“ stated Stanislav Málek, oenologist at the Gotberg Winery.

“To win a platinum medal is a tremendous achievement for the Gotberg Winery since only the most exceptional wines of the world ever reach this level. To do so the specialised jury need to award over 95 points out of a possible 100. There are very few such wines in the world and it is amazing that a wine of the very highest global quality came into being in the Czech Republic,“ commented on the results Pavel Krška, the director of the National Wine Centre, which technically ensures the participation of our wines.

Further great success to add to the platinum medal were also the two golds. One gold medal was won by the Sonberk Winery for Pálava, straw wine, 2016 and the Volařík Winery took the second for Welschriesling, 2016. Silver medals were awarded to the following producers: Zámecké vinařství Bzenec (3), Bábíček/Vacenovský (2), Bohemia Sekt (2), Lahofer (2), Lechovice, Mikrosvín Mikulov, Piálek & Jäger, Rodinné vinařství Břeclav, Vinařství na soutoku Karel Průša, Sonberk (2), Vinice Hnanice, Vinné sklepy Zapletal and Vinselekt Michlovský.

The competition was founded in 2004 by the prestigious Britsh wine and spirits magazine and this year celebrated fourteen years of its existence among the most prestigious and largest wine contests in the world. Medals awarded at the Decanter World Wine Awards serve not only to support the business of our successful wine producers at home as well as abroad, but also act as a signal to other local producers not to be bashful in presenting themselves on the international wine-competition scene and aid an even greater strengthening of awareness of the very high level of our winemaking skills.
