Czech winemakers have brought medals from China

In the travelling international wine competition, Concours Mondial de Bruxelles 2018, which was this year hosted by the Chinese capital Peking (Beijing), our winemakers met success in very fierce competition from 9000 wines from across the whole world. 35 wines took medals, 13 of which were gold and 22 silver. The collective presentation of Moravian and Czech wines was organisationally assured by the National Wine Centre with financial support of the Wine Fund.

Gold medals were obtained by the following wineries: Zámecké vinařství Bzenec (3), Spielberg CZ (3), Family Winery Břeclav (2), Pavel Binder (2) a one each for the wineries of Reisten, Mikrosvín Mikulov and U Kapličky.

In all 83 wines from the Czech Republic were present in the contest, in other words nearly half of these participating samples were successful in receiving a medal: “Given that the competition has a limit that means only 30 % of all wines entered can win a medal, the amount of medals awarded to our wines is an extraordinary recognition of the above-average quality of the wines emanating from Moravia and the Czech lands as compared to other wine-producing countries,“ observed Pavel Krška, director of the National Wine Centre, who attended the competition in Peking.

“This year’s 25th edition of Concours Mondial de Bruxelles was in many ways quite exceptional – if only for the fact that this was the first time it took place outside the European continent, specifically in China’s capital city – Peking. China is blossoming in a very dynamic manner – this can be seen in the infra-structure, and also in the relationship to wine which has become highly fashionable, a trendy drink especially for the younger generation. The Chinese co-organisers approached the organisation in a really generous way and presented their nation to the contest participants from the point of view of tradition as well as its modern approach,“ Pavel Krška of the National Wine Centre informs us.

On the tasting panels the Czech Republic was represented by: Tibor Nyitray and Martin Půček from the Associtation of Wine Producers of the Czech Republic, Josef Balík PhD from Mendel University, Pavel Krška from the National Wine Centre and dr. Luboš Bárta and Ivana Kováříková from the magazine Sommelier.

Next year the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles (2019) competition will be held in Switzerland, more specifically in the town of Aigle.

This year’s (2018) CMB in numbers:

  • 9180 wines from 48 countries were evaluated during the course of three days
  • 330 judges (sommeliers, wine specialists and oeno-journalists)

The international wine contest Concours Mondial de Bruxelles was first held in 1994. In the earliest years it was always held in Brussels, later the location has become travelling among some of the famous wine regions of Europe. These included, for instance, Plovdiv (Bulgaria), Jesolo (Italy), Guimaraes (Portugal), Luxembourg, Bratislava (Slovakia) and others. CMB belongs among the largest wine competitions in the world.
